WHAT DOES A MEDIATOR DO?
- Creates a safe, respectful, fair environment.
- Works with the participants to establish an agenda of the issues to discussed.
- Ensures that all parties have ample and equal time to express their views.
- Facilitates clear, civil, constructive communication.
- Keeps the conversation on track and moving forward.
- Serves as an objective “third eye” and assists participants explore “what is possible.”
- Helps surface difficult issues that may be impeding resolution.
- Directs the process away from you against me towards us against the problem.
- Works with participants to arrive a fair and reasonable settlement that meets the interests of all sides.
A MEDIATOR DOES NOT:
- Make recommendations
- Give advice
- Impose a decision
- Provide counseling
- Take sides
