WHAT DOES A MEDIATOR DO?
  • Creates a safe, respectful, fair environment.
  • Works with the participants to establish an agenda of the issues to discussed.
  • Ensures that all parties have ample and equal time to express their views.
  • Facilitates clear, civil, constructive communication.
  • Keeps the conversation on track and moving forward.
  • Serves as an objective “third eye” and assists participants explore “what is possible.”
  • Helps surface difficult issues that may be impeding resolution.
  • Directs the process away from you against me towards us against the problem.
  • Works with participants to arrive a fair and reasonable settlement that meets the interests of all sides.
A MEDIATOR DOES NOT:
  • Make recommendations
  • Give advice
  • Impose a decision
  • Provide counseling
  • Take sides
